Protecting yourself as a pedestrian in Virginia

On Behalf of | Dec 21, 2021 | Pedestrian Accidents

There are many reasons why a person may opt to get around on foot rather than by using a vehicle. Walking might be a person’s way of being environmentally friendly as well as cost-efficient. Additionally, walking is among the best ways to stay fit and healthy.

Unfortunately, getting around on foot does not come without drawbacks. Pedestrians are not afforded the same levels of physical protection as those in cars, trucks, or other vehicles. Consequently, it is worth considering some safety methods that pedestrians might employ. Outlined below are two key ways to protect yourself as a pedestrian in Virginia.

Wear brighter clothing

Visibility is pivotal in ensuring that you remain safe. Perhaps the most effective way to remain visible to road users is to wear brighter clothing. There are many high-visibility items that are readily available for little expense. Even if you are trying to remain fashion-conscious, a bright jacket can always be removed once you have reached your destination. Brighter colors will be more reflective underneath streetlights or when a car’s headlights face your direction, giving road users a chance to spot you as early as possible.

Keep distractions to a minimum

Although it may be tempting to listen to music or watch videos as you stroll down the sidewalk, this is not really advisable. As a pedestrian, it is important to be fully aware of your surroundings as well as any potential hazards. As you navigate your way on foot, you need to be able to hear as well as clearly visualize the dangers in front of you.

As a pedestrian, you should be able to travel safely. If you have been injured in a collision with a vehicle, then there may be legal options open to you to help you recover from your losses.
